We identified their most lucrative bookings. It’s a popular place for parties. Big O birthday parties – 30ths, 40ths, 50ths and also 21sts – are big parties which means bigger bar sales and bigger profits.
We created a Facebook ad campaign targeting people who were currently 20, 29, 39 and 49 years old, living within a 15-mile radius of the venue, showcasing awesome birthday celebrations.
We ran Facebook retargeting ads to people who responded to the initial ads, using a follow-on message.
The response was huge – the venue was booked out for Friday and Saturday nights 6 months out. That had never happened before.
For this client, Facebook ads and retargeting were the best channel.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”David and Goliath” tab_id=”1519777281099-9677b402-17e3″][vc_column_text]We were talking with a small family business that manufactures, sells and leases machinery used on construction and industrial sites.
They compete with 2 well-resourced international companies which use Google search ads. I noticed that the competitors’ websites were not doing very well in free search – it was obvious that they hadn’t optimized their websites to be found in free search (SEO). Instead, they were relying on buying keywords – Google search ads.
We decided on a simple plan that would be quick to implement with a high potential return. Their website didn’t have many pages and had little content so we decided on a quick search engine optimization, starting with a few main elements. That night I undertook keyword research and wrote home page content.
It usually takes awhile for optimization to deliver more free search traffic but in this case there was little competition for the main keywords. Opportunity!
Even before we had completed the site optimization (tags etc), the new home page content was having an immediate impact – the phone started ringing, they received more inquiries than ever before.
For this client, keyword-based marketing was the best channel.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”New product, high demand, big margins, big competition” tab_id=”1519777285196-e0f0b863-9717″][vc_column_text]A manufacturer client who retails locally and wholesales nationally introduced a new product in a niche with high levels of consumer demand and premium margins. There was fierce competition.
Our client’s competitors and their branded products were already well established. Keyword research showed people even searching for competitors’ product names.
The competitors employ marketing and sales people, exhibit at trade shows, attend events and buy ongoing print ads. Our client did none of this and wasn’t keen to start now, after over half a century in business.
The competitors were very active in social media, had excellent search engine presence and ran online ads.
Our client’s business is very established and relies on their strong local reputation and substantial local market, with no in-house marketing or sales people.
Sales of the new product did not start well despite attractive pricing. Competing products were still selling very well so we knew the consumer demand was there.
We focused on really understanding why people buy this product and what words they were searching for online.
What problems were customers trying to solve?
What advantages and benefits were they trying to gain?
Initially we just used keyword triggered search ads in Google AdWords. Then we added the Google Display Network with Remarketing and later, we added Facebook ads with Retargeting.
We used researched keywords in every step of the funnel from ads to landing pages, since the keywords represented what customers were looking for, the benefit or transformation they were seeking.
Sales started rising steadily and have kept on rising.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Keyword Auctions. How Much Would You Pay For A Click?” tab_id=”1519777286412-72a2a79b-d0c1″][vc_column_text]We were running a Google AdWords campaign. Strangely, the minimum keyword bids kept going up and up.
How much should you pay for a keyword click?
The answer depends on your cost of conversion – cost per click, the % of clicks that convert to sales and your margin on a sale.
That assumes a sale from the first click, but that’s rare so we use remarketing – someone clicks an ad but doesn’t buy immediately so we keep advertising to them until they buy. Or we offer them something valuable in exchange for their email to allow them to get to know the brand with an email or messenger campaign.
Back to the skyrocketing keyword bids. Our client operates in a highly competitive professional services sector. Our initial search ad campaign worked well but it tailed off as competitors responded with higher and higher keyword bids.
We noticed two things.
First up, some competitors kept bidding higher for certain keywords, with bids increasing as much as 5-fold. It looked like they were using automated bidding.
Clicking on those expensive keywords led to search result pages with the maximum number of Google ads – everyone was competing for the same words.
We used manual bids which takes time but gives better budget control. We didn’t raise bids by much at all and then we stopped bidding – we opted out of the most expensive keyword auctions.
The second thing I noticed was that everyone was bidding for keywords that described the type of profession and the services offered.
We decided to take a different approach.
We asked the client about the things that most people contacted them for. What result did people want? What problems were they solving? What were people wanting to do?
We created a Google campaign that targeted the things that people wanted to achieve. The ads offered a valuable info download via email. This positioned our clients as the experts on this subject and enabled low cost email marketing leading to a phone discussion.
We added a live chat feature to the website to make contact even easier. We’ll replace live chat with a messenger bot that leads to live messenger chat.
This new campaign was so successful that we stopped all other online advertising and all other AdWords campaigns.

After a number of years in finance, I sold my business. Then I discovered online marketing. Now that really got my attention! It took me back to English class at age 14, learning the language of advertising which really grabbed me, I was hooked, although it took a few more years to finally start working in advertising and marketing.
My 2 university degrees bring contrasting skills to our client work. One degree gave me the soft skills that I use in my work – linguistics, social sciences and arts; and the other gave me the hard skills including financial markets, corporate finance and economics.
I’ve been invited to sit on or chair a number of company and non-profit boards. I was Chairman of our city’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia organization and I’m a board member for a community-based astronomy organization promoting star gazing and telescopes.
In 2008 I founded Turner Media Ltd Group which operates The Marble Board Digital Agency, Prosperity Lab which runs online courses including TrafficLab which is a DIY online marketing resource, and a number of leading online Directories including Venues and Equine directories and The International Coach Registry, a marketing system for coaches.
Once I’d established the digital marketing business, I realized that I could run it from anywhere in the world. For a few years now, I’ve been living in countries that I love including India where I’ve had the opportunity to enable micro business start-ups as part of our pro bono work and I am working with a local orphanage.
